This was the very 1st restaurant to open on the harbour promenade. Here you can savour the finest Cretan cuisine which has been cooked freshly every day by Maria. Their long history as serving the finest local recipes has won them many fans. Maria, Manolis and their 2 daughters welcome their guests with their loving Cretan hospitality. They also rent out rooms above the restaurant.


In the late 1960s the Gentekakis family opened the first restaurant on Paleochora's harbour promenade. From the very first day Maria prepared and served her delicious Cretan recipes helped by her son Manolis and then joined by her daughter-in-law Maria. Previously known as Manolis Restaurant it is now re-named Maria's Restaurant. Now in second generation Maria's Restaurant is run by Maria and Manolis Gentekakis and helped by their two teenage daughters Franzeska and Georgia.

Every night customers gather to savour Cretan cuisine at its very best, together with excellent service, genuine traditional Cretan hospitality all at a very reasonable cost. An added bonus are the spectacular views over the beautiful Cretan mountains and the Libyan Sea. On a clear day you can even see Gavdos.

Maria spends every day in her kitchen at the restaurant conjuring up a whole range of  delicious dishes using fresh, high quality ingredients to bring out the rich full flavours of traditional Cretan food. The combination of original recipes passed down from mother to daughter, together with a passion for cooking and lots of imagination, leads to a delicious result.

Their reputation has won them a huge number of fans both local and tourists from far and wide who return night after night and year after year. Maria is a wonderful hostess and the quality of her food is always of the highest possible standard.

Come along and try some of her many famous dishes - moussakafish soupseafood spaghettibeef stifadostuffed tomatoesgigantes (big white beans), fish plate for 2, mixed grill amongst many more. Or try one of her new ideas - mixed plate for one of either traditional Cretan vegetable dishes (such as stuffed zucchini flowers, stuffed tomato, imam, boureki etc) or traditional Cretan meat-based food such as mousaka, meat balls, souvlaki, stifado etc. Both are ideal ways to sample several different dishes in small portions all for one incredibly low price.

Above the restaurant the family also rent out rooms and apartments; 9 rear-facing with views towards the mountains and 3 at the front with views over the promenade and sea.
